At our Board of Education meetings in October and November, a number of people took the opportunity to bring a matter of concern to the Board of Education regarding the Redskin mascot. Some spoke in favor of keeping the mascot, and others spoke in favor of changing it. Each Board of Education meeting allows for public participation, where the policy allows an individual to address the Board, without any interruption from the Board or from the audience. An informational presentation on the mascot was also given at the November 9th Board of Education meeting. The presentation and several references are located in the MASCOT INFORMATION link.
In order to provide a platform for inquiry, conversation and shared understanding, we'll be holding community forums at two Special Board Meetings scheduled for 7PM on Wed. December 7th and Wed. January 18th. They will be held in the PPHS Cafeteria. The sessions are scheduled to provide a forum for roundtable discussions in a learning environment on the topic of the Redskin mascot. The Board of Education has set a timeline for the decision to be made at the February 8th, 2017 Board of Education meeting where the use of the mascot will be determined and defined.
