Thursday night the Paw Paw Red Wolves varsity football team traveled to Berrien Springs for their second game of the season. Paw Paw’s defense set the tone early, holding firm with a big goal line stand. The Paw Paw offense couldn't answer though, as they struggled moving the ball on their opening possession, punting the ball back to the Shamrocks.
Berrien Springs took advantage of the opening and scored on the first play from scrimmage, but it would be the last time they came close to scoring the rest of the night. Shawn Jurgensen took the ensuing kickoff back 90 yards for a TD, and after Troy Vandenburg kicked the extra point Paw Paw had the lead 7-6.
From there, Paw Paw went on to dominate the game on both sides of the ball, winning by a final score of 42-6. Leaders on offense for the night were PJ Deyoung who rushed for 153 yards and 3 TD’s. Ben Miller rushed for 114 yards, and Troy Vandenberg caught a 2 yard TD pass from Gunnar Goodell. On defense, Eli Sonnenburg took an interception back 40 yards for a TD, Landon Buhl had 9 tackles, and Bryson Newell had 3 tackles for loss and 6 total tackles. Gavin Turk and Dom Hernandez each had big nights as well, registering 5 solo tackles apiece.
The Red Wolves are back in action this Friday at Sturgis, with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff time!
