Friday night saw the Paw Paw Red Wolves Varsity Football team roll up 131 to take on the Plainwell Trojans in some hard-hitting gridiron action. Paw Paw wasted no time taking control of the game, putting together a 10 play 65 yard scoring drive that was capped off by a two yard Ben Miller touchdown run.
The Red Wolf defense then took the field, and came up with a big fourth down stop giving the offense the ball on the Trojan 40 yard line. Paw Paw’s possession ended just five plays later with a PJ DeYoung 3 yard touchdown run and a 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the defense continued to dominate and PJ Deyoung again scored on a 34 yard TD run. Near the end of the first half, Gunnar Goodell then connected with Bryson Newell on a 7 yard touchdown pass, followed by a Ben Miller 2 point conversion giving Paw Paw a 28-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, the defense dominated, forcing a turnover on Plainwell’s opening possession, leading to another PJ Deyoung touchdown. After Troy Vandenburg connected on the extra point it was 35-0, and the officials started the running clock. Rounding out the scoring for the night was Ben Miller with a 53 yard touchdown run, and Barron Maranich with a 3 yard run giving Paw Paw a 49-0 lead. Ben Miller led the offense with 141 yards on 14 carries and PJ Deyoung had 132 yards on 20 carries. The defense was led by Gavin Turk with 8 tackles, Darrin Strey recovered a fumble, Dom Hernandez and Nate LaMere each had an interception.
